Phase 1 of Lakehead University’s new Orillia campus is the first LEED Platinum university campus in Canada. Kelson played a key part in the leading-edge sustainability features. The 61,000-square-foot three-storey building uses the latest in ground source heat transfer technology, with 120 bore holes to a depth of 120 metres. We installed a rain water collection system, in which the rainwater stored in a pond feature is cycled into the building, UV treated, and used for all sanitary fixtures. The first floor houses a 200-seat auditorium, four 60-seat auditoriums, and an open concept learning commons all with in-floor heating. The second floor contains classrooms, offices, and a UPS server room, where two 100,000 BTUh cooling units provide cooling for Lakehead’s computing needs. The third floor is a central lab with offices on the perimeter. Within the lab area we installed a reverse osmosis machine, and piping to lab benches for natural gas, vacuum, and hot and cold water.
